Thiruppadattirattu — The Sacred Collection of Foot-songs

A complete reader's edition — verse-by-verse exegesis, hidden-meaning decoding, and comparative references to the Vedas, Upanishads, Tamil Saiva canon, and Siddhar literature. Eleven sections. Over six hundred verses. One arc, start to finish: from the disciple's first bow to Vinayagar, to the soul's closing benediction.

The original Tamil was preserved and circulated for a century by the Sri Sarguru Sarva Samarasa Sangam at Coonoor. This English commentary is published by the Foundation at Yellanhalli, The Nilgiris, with the guidance and verification of the lineage's living custodians.

Five layers, one verse

Sri Sarguru Nadha Mahamuni's Tamil looks plain on the surface. Every verse still holds several layers of meaning at once — the commentary simply unpacks what the Guru compressed into two lines.

  1. Literal surface — What the words say if read by a child.
  2. Saiva-Siddhanta doctrine — The technical theology of pati, pasu, pāsam; the three malas; the thirty-six tattvas.
  3. Siddhar-yogic layer — Instructions on vāsi (breath), kuṇḍalini, cakras, nāḍis, and the Panchakshara.
  4. Vedantic / Upanishadic layer — The non-dual Self, the Mahāvākyas, sat-cit-ānanda.
  5. Sarva-Samarasa layer — The dissolution of sectarian boundaries and recognition that all paths converge.

The book moves through them in this order, from first salutation to closing benediction:

  6. Piraviyai Veruththal
